Connor pulled down a bottle of Jameson whiskey and a shot glass from his kitchen cabinet. “Bloody feckin’ hell,” he muttered as he put the glass back, unscrewed the cap, and took a swig directly from the bottle. The burn lit up his throat as he swallowed. His back spasmed as he tilted the bottle up and took a second drink, reminding him he was not a young man anymore. The day had been filled with miscommunication from the site foreman, which turned into more time on the clock to complete the framing deadline. By the time this work week ended, Connor had logged in just under one hundred hours of labor. The time-and-a-half pay was great for his bank account but not so great for his body and mind.

When he’d worked with his father in the family business, overtime pay was forbidden. If extra contractors had to be hired, Fergus expected his sons to take up the slack to avoid paying out time-and-a-half wages. Usually, it was Connor who did the time. Today had been a bitter reminder of those days.

“Connor, did you get the supplies ordered for the Jamestown Inn job?”

“What Jamestown Inn job?”

“The one we start next week.”

“When did that get booked?”

“I told you about it last month!”

“No you didn’t. It’s not on the calendar schedule.”

“Yes I did.”

“We need to delay, then. Everyone is working sixteen-hour days to get this job done, and we’re running behind. I’ll need to get some independent contractors to have a hope of finishing in time.”

“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, boy! We don’t have the budget for that! You and your brothers will just have to work harder.”

“There’s only twenty-four hours in a day, Da. We can’t work ’round the clock. Tired men are not safe men.”

“Pah, you lot are too soft. Find a way to fix it, Connor.”

“Fix it, Connor.”

“Fix it, Connor!”

“FIX IT, CONNOR!”

He cried out and slammed the cabinet closed, knocking one of the hinges off. Fuck, how many times had he heard those three words over and over again during the last years he worked for the family business? He cared deeply about his family, but the weight of their responsibility had nearly brought him to his knees and driven him mad. His father blamed him for the dissolution of the company and rarely spoke to him. Maybe that was why he had some affinity for the kids next door.

Beverly. Goddamn Beverly. She looked devastated when he saw her on the front porch. As tired as he was, he wanted nothing more than to take her in his arms and hold her close. He wanted to find out whatever it was that put that expression on her face and take it away. Instead, she exploded. Her words about Sarah being sick alarmed him, as he had dealt with that when Eva was a child. But after that, the jumble that fell from her mouth drove spikes into his heart.
